Working with Your File

The Basics

The biggest challenge is making sure you have the file in a format that is understandable by a screenreader.  Here are a few steps that should allow you to save in a format usable by screenreaders regardless of your word processor:

1. Load the file.

2. Save the file using “save as” and change the selected format to plain text.  This will strip away any formatting that is visually appealing, but suboptimal for screenreaders.

3. Reload your file and examine it to be sure it still makes sense.

Does your file make sense?

4. Re-save your file using the “save as” feature, this time picking rich text format (RTF).
